I'm always interested in Ramadhan (the month of fasting for all muslims) and how people react to it. Living in a country where muslim is the majority gives me enough "shows" to enjoy. With only few days more before the fasting started, I heard a quite interesting news (not new though) about regulation in Bandung that authorities will make for month of Ramadhan: they will forbid women to wear short skirt during the month. Their argument is that it will disrupt people who are fasting from keeping their eyes and mind holly during fasting.
Fasting is all about controlling your mind and desires. So, the regulation is like saying "I will train my body to adapt to heat. Somebody, turn the aircon on please!!!" It is not called a training if you don't train anything.
Do not get me wrong and think that I disagree with hijab. I do support it as it helps women to protect themselves and remind them to be humble. Yet, I do believe that it is not something that authorities can force, especially because we are not Islam country and there are many non-muslim women who will need to follow the regulation.
Instead of forbidding short skirt, I suggest authorities and parents to encourage people to watch their behavior instead of what they are wearing. And enforce the law for sexual harassment cases.
For ladies in short skirt, just like any other things we do in life, you should be ready to take all the consequences that comes with it. So think about the crowd and the occasion that you will be in. Please also remember that you are not those skinny models, so you should be extra careful to choose which skirt suits you. And you are the one who should respect yourself first before others can.
